HIGHLAND MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD

History of childhood in the Highlands

A range of items such as cradles, a school desk and other school items, a child’s chair and some larger wooden toys is on display in the Museum. Some of these items are owned by the Museum, others are on loan.

The museum tells the story of childhood in the Highlands amongst hardworking crofters and townsfolk, where money and luxuries were scarce and life followed the rhythm of the seasons.  A way of life recorded by oral testimony, displays, and evocative photographs taken at a time before the camera was commonplace.

Find out about ancient customs.  Understand the impact of poor nutrition on family health.  Sit at the old desk and remember schooldays filled with the three "Rs".  Discover a childhood filled with chores and children who found time to make their own entertainment.

Watch the museum's own award winning video, "A Century of Highland Childhood".
